What is plaster?
The most general definition of plaster is “a construction material used for coating walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. It is typically a mixture of gypsum, lime, or cement combined with water to form a paste that is spread over a surface and left to harden ” It is important to understand there are many different types of plaster. The plasters installed by Colorado Walls include lime plaster (sometimes called venetian plaster) and clay plaster. Color is integral to the plaster we install, so color and texture are achieved in one process compared to paint which is first textured by a drywall contractor and later painted by a different crew. Additionally, we install a plaster-like product that is a quartz based, fluid applied, architectural overlay which is more durable and waterproof than traditional plasters.
What is movement in plaster?
Movement is a term used by plasterers that does not have a standard meaning but it refers to the general visual appearance of the plaster. Movement is based mostly on the method of application used by the installer.
How long does the installation process take?
Plaster is a lengthier process than painting, but it’s worth the wait! The time it takes varies depending on variables like total area (sq.ft.), amount of edgework (ie. around stair steps, windows, doors etc.), number of different wall surfaces and their inside/outside corners to name a few. The more square footage a project has the more efficient and productive we can be, and the better the overall value to the customer. A single feature wall can take 2 days. A typical kitchen hood takes 3 days, a fireplace surround can take 3 - 5 days. A whole home installation requires a walk through to estimate a timeframe. These time estimates do not include the necessary process of color and finish selection, so if you are interested in plaster for your project reach out sooner than later to ensure timely completion.

Why choose plaster over paint?
When comparing the value of plaster to paint it is important to realize that plaster accomplishes so much more than paint. Plaster adds texture, color, acoustics, and humidity buffering to a space all in one process. Paint adds only color. Additionally, plaster installation is a more time consuming, labor intensive process. The plaster products we use consist of higher quality natural products than typical paints.
